Season synopsis

Season three opens as Maddie and Joey race to catch Diggie before he leaves for Australia, while Liv learns she has landed a lead role on Voltage, a new series filming in Stevens Point. Josh, Liv’s co-star, becomes part of the Rooney circle, and work on the superhero show spills into school and family life. Maddie is still dealing with Diggie’s departure and trying to decide what she wants after high school.
At Ridgewood, Maddie competes for a college basketball opportunity and strains her friendship with Willow when Willow receives a scholarship Maddie wanted. She later begins dating Josh, but a reporter mistakes her for Liv and links Liv to Josh; Maddie asks Liv to let the story stand rather than risk Diggie hearing about her new relationship. Diggie returns after seeing the report and admits he regrets leaving. When he sings to Maddie, Josh sees how she responds, ends their relationship, and encourages her to follow her feelings. Maddie and Diggie kiss.
As senior year ends, Liv faces a decision when Voltage moves its production to Los Angeles: leave with the show or remain with her family in Wisconsin. She gives up the role to stay, then learns Maddie has been offered a basketball scholarship at Southern California State University. Their plans pull the twins in opposite directions and set off a fight about whether they will share college and a home. When Joey disrupts the support of Parker’s underground tunnels, the Rooney house collapses; the evacuated family heads to California together.
