Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Season two picks up with the Rooney family at Stevens Point's Cheddar-Brat Fest, where Liv's Space Werewolves premiere lands on the same night as the family competition. Maddie is recovering from the knee injury that ended her previous basketball season, and she experiments with pottery before working back toward the court. Liv's acting work expands when she is offered the lead in a basketball movie, so Maddie and Willow help teach the reluctant athlete the game. Their careers and school lives keep intersecting, while Joey and Parker turn ordinary family events into elaborate contests and schemes.
Maddie's relationship with Diggie becomes more difficult after he leaves for Tundrabania and later returns. A secret revealed during Liv's New Year's Eve broadcast makes Maddie question where they stand; when Diggie comes home, the two struggle to reconnect and he breaks up with her before planning another move, this time to Australia. Maddie also regains confidence in basketball, while Liv builds a music group, The Dream, for the Stevens Point Battle of the Bands. Her renewed friendship with neighbor Holden grows into a crush, complicated when Andie asks him to prom first and later dates him.
The Rooney siblings keep crossing between school, performance, and home: Liv and her bandmates debate a music video, Parker helps film it, and Diggie joins the crew; Joey and Artie form a rival band. Maddie's return to competition culminates in the Porcupines winning the Wisconsin girls' basketball state championship. At the victory rally, Diggie tells Liv he regrets ending the relationship and would stay if Maddie wants him back. Maddie decides she may want another chance, but gets trapped in the locker room while trying to reach him. The season ends before they reunite.
