Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

When Liv Rooney comes home to Stevens Point after four years in Hollywood, her return changes the routines she shares with identical twin Maddie, younger brothers Joey and Parker, and parents Karen and Pete. Liv is used to being recognized as the star of Sing It Loud!, while Maddie is known at Ridgewood High for strong grades and basketball. With both parents working at the school, home and school life overlap, and the twins have to learn how to share a bedroom, friends, and attention again.

Their different instincts lead to a steady run of school and family tangles. Maddie is named captain just as the basketball program faces a funding cut, and basketball becomes an early source of pressure at school. Liv struggles to make friends outside television, while Maddie finds her returning sister's efforts to help can feel like meddling. The sisters also trade places to handle each other's challenges, celebrate a complicated sixteenth birthday, and navigate Maddie's growing closeness with basketball player Diggie. Joey and Parker's schemes, and Willow's friendship with Maddie, keep pulling the household into the twins' plans.

Liv's screen career remains part of the family story as she prepares for the role of Tristan in the action film Space Werewolves, with help from an unconventional acting coach, Fangs. Maddie waits to hear whether she can try out for the Junior Olympics, while the girls balance ambition with concern about being separated again. In the finale, Liv begins filming and promises to do her own stunts. At the same time, Maddie tears her ACL on a game-winning shot, needs surgery, and loses her chance at the championship and Junior Olympics. Liv completes the dangerous stunt herself; the movie trailer then helps persuade Maddie to stand and begin her recovery exercises.
