Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
After the Wisconsin house collapses, the Rooneys begin a new life in California with Aunt Dena and cousin Ruby. The move puts Liv back in television work, now on Sing It Louder!!, and brings Ruby into the twins’ everyday orbit as a cousin and almost-sister. Maddie and Willow continue pursuing basketball, while Joey and Parker look for their own ways to settle into the family’s new home and school community.
Liv’s work draws Ruby onto the Sing It Louder!! set, where the younger girl finds the pressure difficult to manage. Later, Liv faces a serious risk to her singing voice and undergoes throat surgery, leaving her unsure whether she will be able to sing again. Maddie and Willow help a homeless acquaintance, while Maddie also considers what she wants from basketball. Joey pursues stand-up, and Parker and Val compete in the Mars Madness challenge.
The series finale gathers the family before new opportunities overturn Karen's planned Summer of Rooney and send the children in different directions. Liv is offered the lead in a New York Broadway musical, then plans to return to Los Angeles for season two of Sing It Louder!!; Joey gets a spot opening for comedian Jim Breuer. Maddie wins a grant to build tiny houses in New Orleans and gives up basketball camp, while Diggie decides to join her. Parker must leave for the biodome in Bolivia. Karen encourages her children to pursue their plans, and the Rooneys spend one last evening together around a campfire, where Liv sings “Better in Stereo” again.
