Emily hits a disoriented woman with her car and calls Cal for help. Veronica insists she is young and says a man called Charlie has killed her sister Rose. Her confused memories lead the Lightman Group to an unresolved death from 1968, when Veronica herself was the suspect. She sometimes mistakes Cal for her late husband Burt, and he uses that recognition to draw out what she cannot explain directly.
Old photographs reveal Rose's pregnancy and the involvement of Charlie Eaton. Veronica eventually admits arranging an abortion during which her sister died. The guilt in her account is real, but it does not explain all the deaths she describes. Cal discovers that Veronica has been calling a recently deceased young resident Rose, mixing present events with her past. Several deaths at the care facility suggest that her fear also concerns someone she has seen recently.
The investigation turns towards psychiatrist Dr Olson, whose white coat triggers Veronica's association with Charlie. Lightman arranges a trap in which Loker poses as a comatose patient and the prepared injection is replaced with saline. Olson attempts to administer it, exposing his role in ending patients' lives. Cal tells Veronica the danger is over, then leaves her playing a piano brought by Emily and her relative. At home, Emily faces the consequences of using her phone while driving, while Cal struggles to settle on a punishment.
