Danielle Ashland asks the Lightman Group to help her mother Carol leave a self-help organisation after an overdose. Its leader, Jack Stafford, promotes positive thinking while controlling how members speak and whom they trust. Carol refuses to leave, but her fear worries Cal and Gillian. They question a doctor who released her back into the group's care and locate a former member who can describe its earlier history.
The inquiry reveals that Danielle was also a member and had a sexual relationship with Stafford. A former girlfriend's account of a suspicious death and Stafford's altered face lead the team to his previous identity, Carl Weatherly. He abandoned a wife and daughter after fleeing a criminal case in Canada. Cal brings that family to one of his appearances, provoking a threat against Cal's own daughter. Finding a watcher outside his house makes the danger to Emily immediate.
Police seize Stafford's hidden records, Carol is found in Arizona, and Stafford is arrested. Gillian then helps Danielle approach her mother so they can begin repairing their relationship. Cal also has to reconsider his own behaviour: Loker and Torres compare his insistence that only he has the answers with the authority Stafford demanded. At home, Cal admits he is struggling with Emily growing up and gives her and Liam room, even while the investigation leaves him defensive about his treatment of the staff.
