A terminally ill restaurateur, Jim Weaver, hires Lightman to find the people who killed his daughter Kira. She was due to inherit the family business, making her estranged brothers obvious suspects. The gunmen appeared to be robbers, but questioning reveals that someone paid them to kill her. Jim's old friend Teddy survived the attack and offers an account that encourages suspicion of the sons Jim had pushed away.

Gillian helps Cal question one brother without treating his grief as proof of guilt. The brothers begin making peace, and Lightman turns back to Teddy after a suspect recognises him during a lineup. Teddy genuinely loved Kira and Jim, complicating his reactions, but resented being treated as an employee after helping build the business. His grief does not erase his wish to inherit control instead of watching it pass to Kira.

Cal stages a confrontation in which Teddy believes Jim is being kept alive by machines and must decide whether to end treatment. Teddy reaches for the paperwork before consulting the family, and Jim, awake and listening, confronts him. Teddy is charged. Afterwards, Lightman tells Jim that treating a lifelong friend as disposable helped poison the family relationships. The case also draws Cal into a conversation with a young thief, who later approaches Torres looking for a different way to use his ability to read people.
