Do No Harm

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Samantha Burch has been missing for two months when her parents hire Lightman and Gillian. A school friend's information leads them to a backpack holding cash and clothing, suggesting she prepared to run away. Her psychiatrist, Dr Knowlton, refuses to discuss her treatment, and the parents admit Samantha suffered burns during an argument at home. Following the medical trail eventually brings police to the clinic where the missing girl has been receiving care.

Reunited with her parents, Samantha insists that she is called Jessica and needs to return home. Gillian draws on her own failed adoption to help Samantha's mother reach her. The girl finally reveals that another child, Heather, is still being held. Lightman traces the abduction to Knowlton, whose daughter Jessica died two years earlier. At a lakeside dock, the psychiatrist holds Heather with a gun before Lightman and Gillian persuade her to surrender. Both girls survive.

Loker and Torres meanwhile examine Farida Mugisha's account of surviving atrocities in Uganda. Loker admires her book and becomes personally involved with her, making him reluctant to accept Torres's doubts. Farida eventually admits fabricating her story to attract attention to suffering in her country, and the publisher withdraws the book. Gillian is left shaken by memories of the baby she and Alec adopted before the birth mother reclaimed her. Lightman stays beside her as she struggles to speak about it.
