Unchained

Lightman and Torres assess Manny Trillo, a former gang leader imprisoned for killing a police officer, whose writing and anti-gang work have raised the possibility of release. An attack inside prison makes the question urgent. Torres doubts his claim to have changed, while Lightman challenges her assumption that a violent past fixes someone's character forever. Their interviews also expose Trillo's secret contact with former associates, though he says he has been trying to negotiate a truce.

The dead officer's widow, Holly, publicly supports Trillo but privately cannot forgive him. Lightman arranges for police to watch when Trillo leaves prison, anticipating that she may confront him. She arrives armed, and the officers surround her before the confrontation ends in tears. Trillo reaches for her hands rather than answering her anger with violence. Lightman later gives Torres his book and links her distrust to the abuse she suffered as a child.

Gillian and Loker investigate the death of rookie firefighter Eric Mitchell. His colleagues' coordinated accounts conceal hazing and their failure to help him. Questions about racism lead to a hidden relationship with a woman connected to the station's leadership. Lieutenant Clayton knew about that relationship and sabotaged Mitchell rather than accept it. Clayton is arrested, and Mitchell's grandfather receives a medal at a memorial. The investigation separates the station's shared silence from the individual act that killed him.
