Zoe Landau asks her former husband Lightman to investigate a fire that injured a girl and killed her grandmother. Frank Ambrose accuses television reporter Jack Garcia because his young son A.J. says he saw him leaving the house. Gillian finds that the boy believes his account, but his changing drawings suggest that someone planted the story. Questions about money and an affair complicate the family's accusations without identifying the arsonist.
Maggie admits that she told her little brother the story because she feared Garcia's affair with their mother would break up the family. A second fire leads to another woman involved with the reporter, and Lightman confronts Garcia's wife Sarah. She confesses to setting both fires in revenge. Working together also brings Cal and Zoe's own relationship back into view. He encourages her to wear her fiancé's ring, but they end up sleeping together despite Emily's warning about their past.
Gillian and Torres separately investigate Dante Edwards's killing amid an apparent feud between rappers. The public hostility does not match the private relationships: Caden loved Dante, while Caden's cousin B knew about them. B admits shooting Dante because he believed exposure would destroy Caden's career. His claim to be protecting his cousin is exposed as the reason he killed the man Caden loved. The arrest ends that investigation while Cal and Zoe's personal decision remains unresolved.
