Laena's funeral gathers the divided family at Driftmark, where grief gives way to arguments about inheritance and loyalty. Rhaenyra and Daemon speak privately about their years apart and become lovers. While the adults are distracted, Aemond approaches Laena's dragon Vhagar and manages to ride her. Rhaena, Baela, Jacaerys and Lucerys confront him afterwards, and their fight leaves Aemond without an eye after Luke uses a knife.
The children are brought before Viserys, with the adults demanding blame and punishment. Rhaenyra focuses on Aemond's accusation that her sons are illegitimate, while Alicent demands that Luke lose an eye in return. Viserys refuses, and Criston does not carry out her command. Alicent grabs the king's dagger herself and wounds Rhaenyra during their struggle. Aemond ends the confrontation by saying that gaining Vhagar was worth the eye he lost.
Otto sees new resolve in Alicent's anger, while Rhaenyra concludes that she needs Daemon beside her as husband and consort. Laenor must appear to die before that marriage can happen. Daemon kills a servant, and Qarl stages a fight with Laenor so that a burned body can be mistaken for him. Corlys and Rhaenys believe their son is dead. Rhaenyra and Daemon marry in a private ceremony, while Laenor escapes with Qarl by boat.
