Corlys's injuries at sea allow his brother Vaemond to challenge Lucerys's right to inherit Driftmark. Rhaenyra and Daemon return to King's Landing, where Viserys is gravely ill and Alicent and Otto are managing royal business. Rhaenyra asks Rhaenys to support Luke and offers marriages between their children to secure Velaryon descendants. The petition threatens more than a single title, since an attack on Luke's birth also threatens Rhaenyra's succession.
Viserys makes a painful journey into the throne room to hear the petitions himself. Daemon helps him reach his seat, and Rhaenys confirms Corlys's wishes and the proposed marriages. Vaemond refuses to accept the ruling and openly insults Rhaenyra and her sons. Daemon kills him before the king can impose his threatened punishment. Luke keeps his claim, with Viserys once again using his remaining strength to defend his daughter's family.
At supper, Viserys asks his relatives to set aside their quarrels. Rhaenyra and Alicent exchange warm toasts, and for a short time the family seems capable of peace. Once the king leaves, Aemond's pointed toast about his nephews being Strong starts another dispute. Later, a dying Viserys speaks to Alicent as though she were Rhaenyra, referring to Aegon's dream. Alicent mistakes the reference for an instruction to place their son Aegon on the throne.
