Season 9

Season synopsis

Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.

Frasier begins the season in Belize with Claire French, but doubts about whether she is the right partner grow after he dreams about Lana and sees her again. He ends the relationship with Claire and tries to reconnect with Lana, only to learn that she is involved with Kirby’s father. His romantic search continues through awkward introductions and attempted setups, including a scheme by Niles, Daphne and Roz to find him a suitable date. At work and at home, Frasier’s advice often sends him into the same complications he warns other people to avoid.

Niles and Daphne take the next step by planning to live together, but Daphne delays the move when her mother Gertrude and brother Simon come to Seattle. Her parents’ separation and her mother’s criticism leave Daphne feeling responsible for keeping the family together. She eventually stands up to Gertrude and chooses to move in with Niles, even as Gertrude pretends to be injured to prolong her stay. Niles later plans a carefully staged proposal with help from Frasier, Roz and Martin; when Daphne arrives sick with the flu, he adapts and proposes at home, and she accepts.

In the finale, Niles persuades Daphne’s estranged father Harry to come to Seattle and try to reconcile with Gertrude. The attempt fails, and Daphne fears that her own marriage could collapse as her parents’ has. Harry reassures her that Niles is the right person for her, explaining how persistently he tried to bring him over. Daphne goes to Niles’s apartment that night and asks him to marry her immediately. He leads her out without a word; their actual wedding and its aftermath belong to the next season.
