Matt's attempt to rescue the kidnapped boy leaves him badly injured in a dumpster. Nurse Claire Temple brings him into her apartment with help from a young neighbour. Matt refuses a hospital because he fears the men hunting him will endanger everyone there. Claire treats his wounds and relieves the pressure in his chest when he struggles to breathe, discovering that her blind patient can detect things she cannot see or hear.
Flashbacks follow Matt and his father Jack, a boxer trying to pay their bills while encouraging his son to study. Criminal associates arrange a match with Carl Creel and order Jack to lose. He changes his mind, bets on himself and arranges for the winnings to reach Matt. Jack wins the fight, giving his son something to celebrate, but is killed afterwards for disobeying the men who fixed it.
In the present, a Russian searching Claire's building claims to be a police detective. Matt knocks him unconscious, takes him to the roof and forces him to reveal where the boy is being held. Claire sees how far Matt will go for information before he sends her somewhere safer. While Karen and Foggy spend the evening together rather than return to her frightening apartment, Matt fights through the kidnappers' hallway and carries the boy out.
