Vanessa's poisoning keeps Fisk at the hospital while Wesley tries to manage the consequences. Karen visits the recovering Matt, questions his account of a car accident and tells him about Fisk's mother. He doubts that the account will produce usable evidence and directs her towards Foggy. The split between the partners leaves her trying to reach both men without understanding what caused it, while Ben is angry that she concealed the purpose of their nursing-home visit.
Claire treats Matt again and urges him to heal before returning to the streets. Remembering Fisk's protective clothing, Matt pursues Turk for the name of its maker and finds Melvin Potter's workshop. Their meeting becomes a fight before Matt understands that Fisk controls Melvin through threats against Betsy. Matt offers protection in exchange for a suit made from the stronger material, giving him a way to face punishment his black clothing cannot withstand.
Wesley's call to Fisk's mother reveals Karen and Ben's visit. Acting without telling his distracted employer, he kidnaps Karen and demands that she persuade Ben and her friends to abandon their investigation. He places a gun on the table and threatens everyone she cares about. When Fisk calls, Karen seizes the weapon. Wesley claims it is unloaded, but she fires repeatedly and kills him. She escapes, leaving Fisk's unanswered calls ringing beside the body.
