Cheol-gang fires at Jeong-hyeok and is shot by the intelligence officers surrounding the building. Before dying, he tries to convince Jeong-hyeok that returning north would condemn his parents. Jeong-hyeok is detained, and the five men sent to retrieve him are taken from the hospital for questioning. Se-ri tries to follow them, insisting that their presence was meant to protect her. In the village, the women prevent impostors from taking Man-bok’s family.
Jeong-hyeok claims he came south to exploit Se-ri and tries to take responsibility for his men. She tells the investigators that he followed Cheol-gang to save her, but he repeats the hurtful account during their meeting. Se-ri recognises his attempt to protect her and cannot persuade him to stop. After leaving the room she collapses, and her condition worsens as doctors treat complications from the gunshot wound. Jeong-hyeok is allowed to return to the hospital.
Seung-jun is captured in the North but escapes with Cheon’s help and receives assistance from a group of children. He meets Dan before his planned flight and gives her a ring, asking for a chance if he can come back. At the airport he learns that she has been kidnapped. He abandons his escape and fights through the men holding her, suffering serious gunshot wounds. The episode leaves his survival and Se-ri’s recovery uncertain.
