The search for explosives smuggler Decker puts Spike among a crowd of bounty hunters at a truck-stop diner. A fight breaks out when some of them harass a waitress, and Spike helps a trucker called VT clear them away. She offers him a meal, believing he is outside a profession she despises. Jet's call exposes his occupation and ends that brief friendship. Faye fares no better on her side of the hunt: she mistakes another customer for Decker and gives the real fugitive time to escape. Damage to both hunters' ships leaves them dependent on repairs and an unwilling lift from VT.

VT later spots Decker driving recklessly and contacts Spike before following him into an abandoned mining area. Decker's attempt to lose her causes a collapse that kills him and traps the others near his explosive cargo. Spike and Faye arrive with their ships still imperfectly repaired, turning a failed capture into a rescue. Spike takes a dangerous route through the wreckage and uses an explosive to open a way out before the whole area can destroy them. Afterward, he identifies VT as Victoria Terpsichore, the widow of the respected bounty hunter Ural. He takes only a small part of the money offered for guessing her name. Decker's reward is gone, but VT leaves with a different impression of this particular hunter.
