Television reports introduce SCRATCH, a movement led by the elusive Dr Londes that promises freedom from the body through a digital existence. Spike notices Faye among its followers and suspects that she has found another opportunity to chase money. A large bounty on Londes confirms why she has gone undercover, but the leader proves difficult to trace. Jet investigates recruiters, Ed searches the network, and Spike follows the route into the organisation. Faye gets further than the others initially, reaching a room of monitors and dead bodies before a high-frequency signal overwhelms her and leaves her unable to escape.
Jet buys SCRATCH's virtual-reality equipment to reach its system directly, but the same kind of signal begins drawing him into a trance. Ein bites him awake and then supplies the breakthrough himself when connected to the headset. The trail leads Jet and Ed to a hospital, while Spike reaches Faye and confronts Londes through the screens. Londes's identity turns out to be a constructed persona controlled by a comatose boy, whose desire to exist outside his body has drawn other people into danger. Jet and Ed disconnect that link, ending the broadcast persona and allowing Faye to wake. The crew cannot bring in the advertised guru as an ordinary prisoner. Their separate investigations have instead exposed the person behind the promise and stopped the immediate threat to its remaining victims.
