Speak Like a Child

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

A parcel addressed to Faye arrives at the Bebop with a delivery charge she has no intention of paying. She leaves, expecting another complication connected to her debts, while Jet wants to find out what he has bought. Spike opens the package and discovers an old videotape that none of them can readily play. A visit to a specialist shop produces a brief view of its contents before the machine fails. Spike's attempt to repair it with a kick destroys it instead. Ed finds a possible replacement in an abandoned department store on Earth, sending Spike and Jet into the ruins for obsolete equipment.

Their expedition ends with a machine that uses the wrong tape format. Meanwhile, Faye interprets news of their absence and disappointment as evidence that they miss her, and she returns to the ship. A second parcel provides the player the men have spent so much effort trying to find. When the tape finally runs, it shows a much younger Faye making a message for her future self. The girl speaks with hope about the life ahead and performs a cheer to encourage the adult she expects to become. Faye watches from outside the room, unable to connect those images to her own memories. The tape gives her a visible past, but seeing that confident child also makes the distance between her former life and present circumstances painfully clear.
