Season synopsis
Contains spoilers for this season and earlier seasons.
Jake returns to the Nine-Nine after completing an FBI undercover assignment against the Ianucci crime family. He tries to move past his feelings for Amy by dating defense attorney Sophia Perez, while Amy ends her relationship with Teddy. Rosa leads a task force against a new drug called Giggle Pig; Jake and the Pontiac Bandit, Doug Judy, help her team take down the operation. Judy uses his help as leverage and escapes arrest again.
Holt's rivalry with Deputy Commissioner Madeline Wuntch becomes a fight over precinct resources and his future. Wuntch steers Holt toward the Giggle Pig operation, then arranges for the Nine-Nine to succeed in a major robbery case. Jake and Amy's closeness changes too: undercover as a couple investigating an identity thief, they kiss, including once outside the cover story.
Holt finds an incriminating letter that could hurt Wuntch, but she threatens to transfer the squad if he uses it. He chooses the job change over putting his detectives at risk and leaves the Nine-Nine to head the NYPD Public Affairs Division. Jake and Amy's undercover assignment ends with their kiss, while Holt's departure leaves the precinct without its captain. The season closes with both changes unresolved, setting up a new workplace and personal arrangement.
