Mike arrives in Albuquerque with a wounded shoulder and visits his daughter-in-law Stacey and granddaughter Kaylee. Stacey has contacted Philadelphia police after finding money hidden in a suitcase that belonged to her husband, Matt, Mike’s son. Detectives question Mike about Matt’s death and the later ambush that killed two of Matt’s fellow officers. Jimmy represents Mike and helps him get a look at the detectives’ notes.
Flashbacks reveal what happened before Mike left Philadelphia. Matt was an honest young officer in a corrupt precinct, but Mike had advised him to accept bribes rather than be marked as a whistleblower. Matt reluctantly took the money and was later killed by officers who feared he would report them. Mike carries guilt over having helped push his son toward that choice.
Mike tells Stacey the truth about Matt and admits his own involvement in police corruption. Flashbacks show the officers who killed Matt later trying to kill Mike as well. Mike had anticipated their move, hidden a gun in their car and pretended to be drunk. When the officers drove him to a garage and planned to shoot him, Mike killed both men. His account explains the wound on his shoulder and why he left the police force, but it does not ease Stacey’s grief or Mike’s regret.
