Eugene 'Doc' Roe moves between Easy Company's freezing positions outside Bastogne and a church being used to treat the wounded. The men have little food, inadequate winter clothing and dwindling ammunition. Medical supplies are scarce too, leaving Roe searching for materials while new injuries keep arriving. German shelling sends the soldiers scrambling into their foxholes and turns the surrounding trees into another danger. Roe answers calls for a medic in conditions where reaching a casualty and having something useful to treat him with are both uncertain.
At the church, Roe befriends a Belgian nurse, Renée, while delivering wounded men and looking for supplies. Beds fill with injured soldiers, and bodies collect outside. German encirclement prevents evacuation, leaving the nurses and medics to care for the casualties where they are. Roe moves between the church and Easy's positions, trying to find enough bandages and morphine to keep treating people. Neither place offers him a break from the wounded.
The strain grows as casualties continue and the company struggles to hold its position. A young replacement sharing Babe Heffron's foxhole is hit and lies bleeding beyond reach in the snow. Roe must keep working despite the losses around him. After shelling destroys the church, Roe finds Renée's scarf in the ruins and uses it to bandage Babe's hand. Easy remains cold and exhausted in its positions, while Roe continues caring for the men.
