Crossroads

Episode spoilers.

Richard Winters writes a report on a recent action while the episode returns to the fighting he is describing. Easy Company has found German troops near a crossroads, and Winters prepares an attack before leading the charge himself. He reaches the enemy ahead of his men and shoots a young German soldier. The rest of Easy catches up, killing or capturing the larger force they have encountered. Writing the account requires Winters to revisit decisions that were made in only a few moments under fire.

Promotion takes Winters away from direct command of Easy and into battalion duties. Reports and planning fill time he once spent alongside the men, and the distance from the company is difficult for him. Leave in Paris offers a change of surroundings, but the face of the young German remains with him. Around civilians enjoying the city, Winters cannot simply put the fighting aside. His new position has changed his daily work without giving him a clean break from the actions he must describe on paper.

Moose Heyliger takes over Easy, but a nervous replacement accidentally shoots and wounds him. Norman Dike becomes the company's next commander. Before the men can settle into their time away from combat, they are ordered towards Bastogne to meet a German counteroffensive. They lack enough winter clothing and supplies for the move. On the road, Easy passes exhausted troops coming away from the fighting and gathers whatever ammunition and medical supplies those men can spare.
