New replacements join Easy Company after the losses in Normandy, entering a group whose surviving men trained and fought together. Their arrival makes the absence of the dead harder to ignore, and acceptance does not come easily. Denver 'Bull' Randleman helps the newcomers settle into the company and prepare for combat. Easy then takes part in Operation Market Garden, jumping into the Netherlands as the Allies attempt to open a route towards Germany. At first the operation brings an enthusiastic welcome rather than another battle.
The people of Eindhoven celebrate their liberation, although the men also see women accused of relationships with German soldiers having their heads shaved. The welcome ends when Easy moves on to Nuenen and meets German resistance far stronger than expected. Tanks and gunfire force the company to withdraw, and the replacement Miller is killed. Buck Compton is wounded, while a bullet strikes Nixon's helmet. Randleman is wounded and cut off from the retreating soldiers, leaving him to hide in a barn behind enemy lines.
Local civilians help Randleman as he tries to avoid capture, but a German soldier enters the barn and he has to fight at close quarters. Back with Easy, men including some of the new replacements go out to look for him. Randleman survives and returns to the company. The operation that began with crowds cheering in the streets has left Easy retreating and counting another set of losses.
