Carentan

Episode spoilers.

Easy Company attacks Carentan under heavy German fire, taking casualties as the men move through the town. Soldiers are struck in the streets and buildings, and rescuing a wounded friend can mean stepping back into the same fire. Private Albert Blithe struggles to function after the Normandy landing. The fighting leaves him overwhelmed, and his fear becomes a separate struggle alongside the company's advance. Rather than following only Winters through the action, the episode stays close to a soldier who cannot yet make himself face it.

Speirs tells Blithe that accepting the possibility of death is the only way he will be able to act as a soldier. At Bloody Gulch, Easy faces a strong German attack and risks being overrun. Winters urges Blithe to stand and shoot. As American tanks arrive and change the course of the fight, Blithe fires at a retreating German. He later finds the body and takes an edelweiss flower from the dead man's uniform. Blithe volunteers to lead a patrol after finding some confidence in battle, but a gunshot leaves him badly wounded. His new willingness to fight ends abruptly. The episode's closing claim about his death is incorrect: the real Albert Blithe lived until 1967.
