The Breaking Point

Episode spoilers.

Carwood Lipton tries to keep Easy Company together as the men endure more shelling in the woods near Foy. Their commander, Norman Dike, offers little dependable direction, leaving Lipton to check the foxholes and support the soldiers himself. Joe Toye loses a leg during a bombardment. Bill Guarnere goes to help him and is hit when the shelling resumes, losing a leg as well. Finding both friends badly wounded leaves Buck Compton overwhelmed, and he is eventually taken off the line.

Further shelling kills Muck and Penkala, adding to the losses the surviving men must carry into the attack on Foy. Dike falters during the advance and the company stalls under fire. Watching the assault break down, Winters sends Speirs to replace him. Speirs pushes the attack forward and runs through German positions to reach another American company. He then runs back across the same ground. The men who have been waiting for clear leadership see their new commander take the risks required to get them moving again.

After the fighting, the survivors gather in a church while a local choir sings. Lipton recalls the men who have been lost, and the episode shows their places among the company becoming empty. Easy has taken Foy, but the men resting together are a much smaller group than the company that entered Belgium. Their time in the woods remains visible in the people missing from the seats around them.
