About the series

Arcane is an animated fantasy drama set in the twin cities of Piltover and Zaun, whose residents experience progress and power very differently. The upper city builds its identity around invention, while the undercity bears pollution, poverty and the consequences of political neglect. Created by Christian Linke and Alex Yee, the series follows a conflict that is both civic and intimate: new magical technology changes the balance between the cities as the sisters Vi and Powder become estranged and grow into people who appear to be fighting for opposite sides.

The opening movement makes that conflict personal before it becomes a question of weapons or government. Orphaned Vi and Powder live under the care of Vander with their friends Mylo and Claggor. Their attempt to steal from an inventor’s Piltover apartment brings them into contact with unstable blue crystals; Powder accidentally sets off an explosion, and the group escapes into the widening response. That incident is more than a convenient trigger: it reveals how a small act by children in Zaun can bring the machinery of the wealthier city down on their community, while setting Silco’s plans in motion behind the scenes.

The next episode revisits the heist from the other side of its broken laboratory. Jayce Talis is a young Piltover academic whose research into magic is forbidden, and Caitlyn Kiramman’s family has sponsored his work. A childhood rescue by a mage left Jayce with a crystal and a belief that magic could be studied scientifically. The Academy’s dean, Heimerdinger, regards such work as dangerously unpredictable; the Council threatens punishment, while Viktor, the dean’s assistant and a fellow idealist, becomes interested in Jayce’s ambition. Viktor secretly saves Jayce’s journal from disposal after the Council expels him from the Academy. When Jayce approaches the broken edge of his laboratory intending to end his life, Viktor interrupts him and offers to complete the research together.

Silco and Vander once shared a revolutionary cause before splitting over whether Zaun should risk another war. Vander surrenders himself rather than let Vi take the blame, but Silco’s gang captures him and the children attempt a rescue. Powder brings a crystal-powered bomb to the warehouse, hoping to help. Its blast kills Mylo and Claggor and leaves Vander injured. After Silco stabs him, Vander drinks Shimmer, defeats the mutated Deckard and carries Vi out of the fire before dying. Vi strikes Powder and calls her a jinx, then retreats in distress. Seeing Silco approach her sister, she tries to return, but Marcus knocks her unconscious and takes her away. Powder believes Vi has abandoned her; Silco offers comfort, beginning their adoptive relationship.

After a substantial time jump, the city’s fortunes have shifted but its divisions remain. Hextech has made Piltover a celebrated centre of innovation, while Zaun’s drug trade and corrupt enforcement keep ordinary residents exposed to danger. Caitlyn follows clues linking an attack to the undercity’s emerging criminal power, but her family removes her from the Enforcers. Her investigation leads her to Stillwater prison, where she finds Vi, who has spent years locked away. Caitlyn chooses to listen to Vi’s account and release her, and their uneasy partnership gives the story a route between the two cities that neither woman could have made alone.

Their investigation moves through the undercity’s social network rather than through official channels. Vi knows how to reach its informants; Caitlyn must disguise her uniform and learn that the rules she trusts do not operate there. Meanwhile, Piltover’s response to violence becomes another source of instability. Jinx’s attack during Progress Day kills Enforcers and allows her to steal a Hextech gemstone and research. Jayce’s elevation to the Council ties his scientific work to policy, while Viktor’s illness makes him increasingly willing to gamble with the Hexcore, a crystal-driven invention that reacts to his blood. Private ambition, public security and medical desperation now share the same volatile technology.

When Vi asks the Council to act against Silco, the appeal fails, so she turns to Jayce. They enter Zaun with Hextech-powered equipment to disrupt the Shimmer supply. The raid exposes Jayce to the human cost of the conflict when a young factory worker dies; he then negotiates with Silco, offering independence for Zaun in exchange for ending Shimmer production, returning the stolen gemstone and surrendering Jinx. The proposed settlement shows how close political compromise can come while remaining rooted in the loss of an individual child. It also turns Jinx, Silco’s adopted daughter and Vi’s sister, into the price demanded for peace.

Vi and Jinx’s reunion makes that demand impossible to treat as an abstract political bargain. Jinx forces Vi to choose between the sister she remembers and the person she has become, while also bringing Caitlyn into the confrontation. During the struggle, Jinx accidentally kills Silco, the second father figure she has lost. Vi tries to comfort her, but Jinx takes the stolen gemstone, installs it in a rocket and fires at the Piltover Council as its members vote on peace with Zaun. The season closes at the instant negotiation is transformed into another attack. Its plot has made each attempt to protect family or city carry consequences for people far beyond its immediate target.
