Nioh 3 Jakotsu-baba: Hamamatsu Crucible
On this page
Prepare from First Torii Gate
Jakotsu-baba is the mandatory boss at the end of the Hamamatsu Castle Crucible. Start from the First Torii Gate shrine, clear the route deliberately, and avoid treating the runback as a speed test. The Crucible makes each hit more costly by reducing maximum Life, so an extra elixir, an active Soul Core, and one clean Burst Break are worth more than reaching the fog door quickly.
From First Torii Gate, continue through the building and across the bone bridge toward Otemon Gate. In the building on the left after that bridge, a large red chest holds the Supreme Parry skill book. It restores Life after a successful Burst Break. A Sudama near the Crucible entrance sells Enduring Destruction, which increases damage after the same counter. Neither is required, but both give the boss’s red-aura move a practical payoff.
At the shrine, set a Soul Core you can actually use and leave shortcuts for elixirs and any prepared Onmyo Magic. Find Kodama and Jizo Six statues on the route when possible: they support healing capacity and Crucible resistance. Do not copy a level target blindly. Enter when your chosen style can finish a short string and still dodge the next attack.
Answer each tell once
The red aura means a Burst Attack. Style Shift at the last moment for Burst Break; it interrupts the move, damages Life and Ki, and opens a short punish. This is a timed style switch, not Nioh 2’s Burst Counter. If the timing is not secure, survive the attack first and practise it on the next clear tell.
For the grab, watch the main head draw back with yellow embers and grey smoke. Dodge as the head launches. Staff and jump slams send a circular hit out from the impact, and the staff sequence can continue, so move clear before returning. Snake jabs, whips, and slams are a choice point: evade for a Ninja rear opening or use Samurai Deflection if the timing is familiar. During fire breath, stay close if you were already inside the head’s safe space; if you began at range, run out rather than crossing the whole flame line.
| Attack | Safe first response | Payoff |
|---|---|---|
| Red-aura Burst Attack | Timed Style Shift | Burst Break and a short punish |
| Head retracts, embers and smoke | Wait, then dodge the launched head | Reset behind the boss |
| Staff or jump slam | Clear the circle and wait for follow-ups | Recovery after the sequence |
| Snake jab string | Evade behind or Deflect in Samurai | Rear damage or Ki recovery |
Take the route reward forward
Defeating Jakotsu-baba ends the Hamamatsu Crucible gate and advances the story into later zones. The lasting reward is the skill set you learned under Crucible pressure: preserve Life, identify the red tell, and spend the opening rather than extending a greedy combo. Ki Pulse and Burst Break explains why the counter works. Soul Cores and Guardian Spirits helps turn the next boss opening into a configured Guardian or Onmyo response.
