Nioh 3 Soul Cores and Guardian Spirits

Purify the Core before planning around it
Yokai can drop Soul Cores, but a new Core is not ready the moment it drops. Pray at a shrine and purify it before trying to place it. Then use Manage Soul Cores to compare its Attack and Defence bonuses, special effects, and Onmyo Magic. A Core’s benefits change with its position in the Onmyo Box, so read both positions instead of treating every drop as a direct upgrade.
Yin gives access to the Core’s corresponding Onmyo Magic. Set that magic on an item shortcut and its uses return when you pray at a shrine. Yang gives Attack and Defence boosts plus special effects. It can also provide a Summoning Seal, but only after you defeat that Core’s associated Crucible Wraith. A seal summons the corresponding yokai to attack; it is not an automatic reward for equipping the Core.
Match the spirit to the style, not the name
Guardian Spirits are also separate equipment for Samurai and Ninja. Each changes your enhanced stats, special effects, and usable Guardian Spirit Skill. Spirit Force, earned by attacking, pays for that skill. The icon glows when it is ready, making it a useful response after you have created an opening rather than a button to press at the start of every fight.
Destroying a Crucible Spike expands the special effects and Guardian Spirit Skills available to you. Later, the same shrine menu unlocks Core and Guardian enhancement with Soul Fragments. Until that gate opens, use Resting Rites on spare Cores to receive Soul Fragments and occasional yokai materials; do not dismantle the one effect you still rely on.
| Need | Start with |
|---|---|
| A shortcut spell | Put the appropriate Core in Yin |
| Passive bonuses and a possible summon | Put the Core in Yang, then find its Crucible Wraith |
| A burst after sustained attacks | Spend charged Spirit Force on a Guardian Spirit Skill |
| A different response in each style | Set separate Samurai and Ninja Guardian Spirits |
When the Amrita Gauge is full, Living Artifact is another temporary option: attacks cannot kill you while it lasts, but incoming hits shorten the gauge. Save it for a dangerous phase you can identify, not for routine enemies. Ki Pulse and Burst Break shows how to make the boss opening first. Jakotsu-baba gives an early Crucible route where Core preparation has a clear purpose.
