Monster Hunter Wilds: Traps and Captures
On this page
Capture starts when the monster is nearly defeated
A standard capture needs a target that is weakened enough, a usable trap, and tranquilising items. Watch for the low-health cues such as limping and the skull on the minimap. When those appear, stop long, hard-to-cancel attacks. Lead the monster onto stable open ground, place a Shock Trap or Pitfall Trap on its path, and use the required tranquilliser while it is held.
Prepare before the target is critical. Trap Tools come from the provisions supply, while a Pitfall Trap uses a Trap Tool and Net, a Shock Trap uses a Trap Tool and Thunderbug Capacitator, and Tranq Bombs use Sleep Herb with Parashroom. Set the trap and tranq item on the wheel so a successful low-health read is not lost while scrolling menus.
A capture is not valid for every situation
Read the quest objective and target before deciding the finish. Some tasks require a slay, some explicitly require capture, and some encounters or targets can resist a particular trap. In multiplayer, the quest poster’s plan matters: signal the capture early, then wait for the target to enter the trap rather than adding damage that could end the hunt.
| Cue | Next action |
|---|---|
| Skull icon / limping | Put away risky attacks and move toward a clear trap location. |
| Monster reaches the trap | Use the tranquilliser promptly while it is restrained. |
| Monster leaves a cramped area | Follow to stable ground instead of dropping a trap into chaos. |
| Quest objective says slay | Do not force a capture sequence. |
Do not use elapsed hunt time as a capture signal: weapon, group size, and target part damage make it unreliable. This guide avoids claims about reward superiority or fixed health thresholds. The useful sequence is clear: check the objective, prepare the tools, wait for the visible cue, trap, then tranquillise.
