Monster Hunter Wilds: Focus Mode and Wounds
On this page
Aim for the part you can actually keep hitting
Focus Mode lets you adjust your facing and target more deliberately while fighting. It is useful when a monster turns, when you want to keep pressure on a specific body part, or when the camera has lost the line of attack. Do not hold it merely because it exists. Use it to make a choice: head, tail, wing, wound, or a safer leg while the monster is moving.
Repeated hits can create wounds. A wound is an opportunity, not a reason to mash immediately. Look for the visible mark, then use the weapon’s Focus Strike when the monster has committed to a recovery, a topple, or another opening. A rushed Focus Strike into an active attack can trade your clean damage window for a cart.
Build a repeatable wound loop
- Choose one reachable part rather than chasing every exposed weak spot.
- Maintain pressure through safe attacks until a wound appears.
- Reposition so the Focus Strike will not whiff into a turn or terrain.
- Use the strike in a real opening, then return to the weapon’s normal loop.
Some weapons use Focus Mode mainly for precision, while others gain a more dramatic directional or resource benefit. Learn your weapon’s manual entry before trying to copy another weapon’s approach. The important shared habit is to see a wound as information about where your attacks have been landing.
This page does not list damage values, wound thresholds, or patch-specific optimal sequences. Those can change, and the player-facing decision is still to aim, recognise the opportunity, and use a committed strike safely. Pair it with Choose Your First Weapon before turning the system into a build rule.
If the Focus Strike keeps missing, do not assume the command is weak. Ask whether the target part was visible, whether the monster was still moving, and whether your weapon needed a different angle. A wound window is valuable because it rewards deliberate pressure; it is still okay to leave it untouched if using it would put you in front of an attack you cannot read.
