Monster Hunter Wilds: Quest Progression and Preparation

On this page

Let assignments introduce the next layer

The story’s early assignments introduce a target, an area, and a new reason to use the smithy or field tools. Finish the objective, then look at the reward materials and the next target before deciding what to forge. You do not need to grind every available monster immediately. A single weapon improvement, a better armour piece, or a replenished item pouch can be enough to make the next assignment readable.

Before accepting a quest, read its target and objective. A hunt, a capture, and an investigation-style task can ask for different preparation. Check the environment too: bring items that solve the status or terrain problem you actually expect, not a backpack of unrelated consumables. The Seikret and map help you reach marked targets and resources, but the field still rewards knowing where you want to go next.

Alma’s Quest Counter is the practical control point. Use it to post or join a quest, see work from lobby or Link Party members, and check the quest settings before departure. A posted quest can set its member limit, passcode, recruitment comment, player/Support Hunter option, and automatic SOS choice. For a main assignment, wait until every hunter has cleared the needed story scene before expecting the same quest to be available to the whole group.

Use camp as a reset, not a delay

Between quests What to check
Smithy One weapon upgrade or armour skill that helps the next target.
Item box Healing, weapon supplies, and capture tools if the objective allows capture.
Map Target location, a useful camp, and any resource you deliberately want to collect.
Hunter notes / Play Guide One behaviour or weapon input you plan to test this hunt.

If an assignment feels impossible, identify why the last attempt ended: damage from one move, lost healing, missed openings, or an underused weapon mechanic. Change one of those things and try again. Swapping every armour piece and weapon at once makes it harder to learn what helped.

This is launch-game progression advice, not a complete post-game roadmap. Event availability, later monsters, and endgame rewards can change over time. The early loop is enough to begin: accept a clear objective, prepare for it, hunt deliberately, and use the result to improve the next attempt.
