Tiamat's Wrath
Several years after the events of the previous volume, the elderly politician Chrisjen Avasarala dies and is given a state funeral on Laconia, where James Holden, still a captive, pays his respects.
About
Tiamat's Wrath is a science fiction novel by James S. A. Corey, the pen name of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, and the eighth book in their Expanse series. Following the series' practice of taking its titles from ancient mythology, the name refers to the Babylonian goddess Tiamat, who took part in the creation of the universe.
The plot continues from Persepolis Rising, which had moved the series decades forward within its own timeline. Chrisjen Avasarala dies of old age at the start of the book and is given a state funeral on Laconia, and Holden, who remains a prisoner there, attends. His position is not that of an escapee: he is permitted to move around the grounds. The second thread is scientific: Elvi Okoye and Fayez are sent through the gates to survey the dead systems, the ones whose gates open on no habitable world, and in the Adro system they find a planet-sized green diamond that behaves like a record of something. The mission's real purpose is to find a system with nothing in it, because the Laconians mean to use one as a staging ground for an attack.
