The Silver Chair
Eustace Scrubb and Jill Pole are sent into Narnia by Aslan and given four signs to follow in a search for the prince who disappeared ten years earlier.
About
The Silver Chair is a children's portal fantasy novel by the British writer C. S. Lewis, published by Geoffrey Bles in 1953. It was the fourth of the seven Chronicles of Narnia books to appear, and in later editions sequenced by internal chronology it has been placed sixth.
Eustace Scrubb returns to Narnia with a schoolfriend, Jill Pole, who has never been there. Aslan gives them a task and four signs to recognise along the way, and they set out to find the prince who vanished ten years earlier, with a marsh-wiggle called Puddleglum as their guide. The search takes them to the northern giants and then underground, where the signs become much harder to interpret.
Lewis wrote the series with a different child at the centre of each book, and this one is told largely from Jill's point of view. Its interest is in how hard it is to follow instructions once they stop seeming to make sense, which is the pressure the four signs are built to apply.
