Knight Triumphant
After her husband Afton, Lord of Langley, dies of plague, the Englishwoman Igrainia finds herself a captive in her own castle, held by the Scottish warrior Eric Graham, whose wife and son died as prisoners of Lord Langley.
About
Knight Triumphant is a 2002 historical romance by Heather Graham and part of her Graham Clan sequence. It is set in medieval Scotland and England, and its plot is built on a forced marriage between two people whose families have already injured each other.
The situation is a mirror of injury. Igrainia loses her husband to plague and then her home to Eric Graham, who seizes the castle, and his own wife and son had died while prisoners of her husband, so both of them are grieving the same crime from opposite sides. The forced marriage follows from a political refusal: the king will not exchange Igrainia for the wife of Robert the Bruce, so Graham marries her instead as a means of holding the region.
The novel's interest is in the change neither anticipates, since Graham comes to want his unwilling bride and Igrainia discovers the man beneath the reputation. The novel is written for readers of the medieval romance, in which the political marriage is the obstacle and the change of feeling between the couple is the plot.
