Build the Gate of Fates and Your Skills

On this page

Wolcen has two progression layers: a rotative passive skill tree with 21 sub-class sections called the Gate of Fates, and skill customisation through modifier points.

The tree is a direction, not a list

Three stages of Wolcen progression: choose a path through the Gate of Fates, level the skills, then spend modifier points on them.
Passives and skills are separate ladders. Open the full image.

With 21 sub-class sections laid out on a rotative tree, the useful way to read it is as a path rather than a collection. The publisher’s framing of making your own path through it suggests the passives you skip define the character as much as the ones you take.

Modifiers rewrite a skill

Skill modifier points are described as doing far more than increasing damage: changing damage type, adding new functionality, granting buffs or debuffs, or changing the skill’s mechanics completely. That makes an individual skill a small build inside the larger one.

Level the skill to earn the points

Skills are levelled along with the character, or with alternative resources, to earn modifier points. Since the options are described as limitless, the honest approach is to settle on a few skills and modify them deeply rather than spreading points across everything you own.

Uniques break the rules on purpose

The item list includes unique items and rare affixes that the store says break the rules and unlock new possibilities. Those are the pieces worth building around, because they change what the rest of your plan can do.

Everything you modify has to be usable with your chosen weapon, as covered in letting the weapon pick your skills, and it all costs resources, per the three resources.
