James Delos lives inside an immaculate apartment, receiving visits from William that appear to repeat across decades. The visits are tests: Delos died, and the company has been trying to reproduce his mind in a host body. Each version eventually breaks down. An older William finally abandons the experiment, telling the latest copy that the family he remembers has died or fallen apart.
During the rebellion, Bernard finds Elsie alive in the cave where he left her under Ford's orders. She discovers that he is a host and reluctantly repairs him. They enter a concealed laboratory, find murdered staff and encounter the deranged remaining Delos copy. Elsie destroys it. Bernard recalls retrieving another control unit and ordering the laboratory massacre, but he cannot identify the mind that unit contains.
William and Lawrence reach Lawrence's hometown, where Craddock is terrorizing the residents and demanding weapons. William initially offers him ammunition and a route west, then attacks when Craddock threatens Lawrence's wife with explosives. Lawrence kills Craddock after William forces nitroglycerin into his mouth. Through Lawrence's daughter, Ford warns that saving this family does not erase William's past. Elsewhere, Grace escapes the Ghost Nation's custody. She eventually meets William on the trail and calls him her father, revealing their relationship as his party prepares to continue toward the valley.
