Lagertha's body is discovered in Kattegat, and Torvi rides to the farm to find out what happened there. She learns that Hali is dead as well. Ubbe struggles with grief for Lagertha despite remembering that she killed his mother, Aslaug. Hvitserk is found almost frozen in the woods and brought home, but refuses to explain his disappearance. The funeral preparations begin before the town knows who killed Lagertha.
Gunnhild asks for a volunteer to accompany Lagertha in death. Torvi offers herself, but her pregnancy rules her out. A young shieldmaiden named Gyda is chosen and killed as part of the ceremony. Lagertha is laid aboard a ship with gifts, and Ubbe, Torvi and Gunnhild say their farewells. Bjorn reaches Kattegat in time to mourn his mother and promises to punish her murderer. The burning ship is pulled through the broken ice and sinks; the closing image reunites Lagertha with Ragnar beneath the water.
Elsewhere, Harald imprisons Olaf, demanding allegiance from the man who once held him captive. In Rus, Ivar and Igor receive news that Dir is safe and intends to support them. Oleg and Katia continue unsettling Ivar with her resemblance to Freydis. Ivar speaks of wanting to walk, while Oleg responds with his own wish to return to his mother's womb and be born again. Their exchange leaves the struggle between them unresolved.
