The Last Act

Full episode spoilers.

Ivar meets Alfred to discuss peace, but Alfred rejects the offer and the armies resume fighting. As Hvitserk battles the Saxons, Ivar struggles forward and urges his brother to leave the field. They exchange declarations of love before Ivar faces a frightened young soldier. He encourages the man, who stabs him repeatedly. Alfred stops the fighting as Hvitserk holds his dying brother. Hvitserk later speaks at Ivar’s grave, then accepts baptism and the name Athelstan. News of the defeat reaches Kattegat, where Ingrid is acclaimed as queen.

Ubbe and Torvi reunite with Floki, who explains that the people of this land cared for him after his arrival. The welcome is threatened when Naad searches for gold, enters a local dwelling and kills a man who discovers him. Brought before Ubbe, he claims he was defending himself. Ubbe refuses to excuse the killing and sentences him to death. Although he initially prepares a blood eagle punishment, he instead cuts Naad’s throat in front of the gathered community.

The hosts make clear that welcoming the newcomers does not give them ownership of the land. Torvi embraces Pekitaulet, accepting that boundary as the survivors try to remain there without repeating their earlier violence. Ubbe later sits with Floki on the beach and asks whether coming was the right decision and whether the gods are present. Floki offers practical advice, speaks of Ragnar and urges him to let the past go. They remain together looking out over the water.
