Oleg returns to Kiev after the defeat and insists that being beaten by Bjorn will never happen again. He destroys Igor's room, telling the frightened boy that his innocence must end. The officers who failed him are ordered to dig ditches before being killed. Oleg forces Igor to execute a pleading survivor, and Ivar gives the boy a reluctant signal to obey rather than defy his uncle.
Dir secretly meets Ivar and Igor, revealing that he has gathered an army and wants Igor restored to power. Oleg, meanwhile, draws Hvitserk closer with drugs and questions about Ivar. Katia tries to convince Ivar that she is willing to betray her husband. She later appears dressed to resemble Freydis, and the two sleep together. Afterwards, Ivar tells her about Dir and his intention to protect Igor, trusting her with the conspiracy.
News of Bjorn's death reaches Ubbe in Iceland, but he refuses the idea of returning to claim a crown. He and Torvi still want to sail west, and Ubbe speaks separately with Othere and Kjetill to secure their cooperation. In Kattegat, Erik urges Gunnhild to stand for ruler while encouraging Ingrid to do the same. Ingrid announces that she is pregnant and insists the child is Bjorn's.
