Bjorn begins his rule in Kattegat by promising a different future for the town. He wants trade to bring prosperity after Ivar's reign of fear. When Ivar's collaborators are brought before him, he banishes them instead of ordering their deaths. Lagertha approves of his restraint, while Hvitserk disagrees. The choice gives Bjorn an early chance to decide what kind of king he intends to be.
Lagertha leaves public life to build a farm. Ubbe and Torvi travel with her and help her find a place where she can settle, grow crops and live quietly. The journey reminds her of the home she once shared with Ragnar. At the riverbank, she buries her sword and promises the gods that she will stop fighting, putting her new life ahead of her reputation.
Far from Kattegat, Ivar travels along the Silk Road until his party is attacked and he is taken to Prince Oleg. He admits that his brothers defeated him, but also repeats his claim to be a god. Oleg has Ivar's companion killed and takes Ivar into the air in a balloon. Fear gives way to exhilaration during the flight. Oleg later speaks of his murdered wife and turns his attention toward Kattegat, finding a possible use for his unexpected guest.
