The Saxons attack York, where Ivar has prepared the streets to turn their advance against them. Aethelwulf and Heahmund lead their men into a close fight with the defenders, but cannot recover the city. Ivar joins the battle in his chariot and is thrown onto the ground. Covered in blood, he defies the soldiers facing him, while the fighting prevents Heahmund from finishing their confrontation.
After the victory, Ubbe and Hvitserk seek terms at the Saxon camp without Ivar's agreement. Their attempt produces humiliation instead of peace, and Ivar uses it to demand sole command. Ubbe refuses and prepares to return to Kattegat. Hvitserk initially joins him, then jumps back ashore to remain with Ivar. The army still holds York, but the brothers who captured it together now stand on opposite sides of their own dispute.
Harald brings Astrid home and presents her to his people as part of the future he wants to build. She receives the attention and gifts without simply accepting his advances; when he tries to kiss her, she strikes him. Bjorn and Halfdan continue their journey, discussing the wish to experience life beyond conquest and considering how to approach foreign shores as traders. In Iceland, Floki follows visions and notices that the wound on his hand has disappeared.
