Harald arrives in Kattegat with news from England, but Lagertha confronts him about his part in the attack on her town. She has him restrained rather than accepting his account as a friend. Harald admits his ambitions and proposes marriage as a way to join their power. Lagertha refuses to become his queen, leaving him a prisoner in the settlement he had hoped to bring under his rule.
His men release him, and Harald escapes by ship with Astrid as his captive. He offers her the position that Lagertha has rejected, placing Lagertha's lover in the middle of his plans for Norway. In England, Aethelwulf gathers his forces and joins Heahmund near York. The bishop examines the city's defences, while inside the captured town Ivar's claims to command continue to strain his relationship with his older brothers.
Floki has surrendered his voyage to the gods after leaving his companions behind. Alone at sea, he throws away the instruments that could guide him and endures a storm before reaching an unfamiliar shore. He explores the volcanic landscape and a great waterfall, finding signs that he understands as divine. The land gives him a destination after his grief and drifting, but he sees it through his faith rather than as an ordinary new country.
