In the Uncertain Hour Before the Morning

Spoilers for this episode.

Lagertha confronts Aslaug after taking Kattegat. Aslaug gives up her claim to the settlement and asks for safe passage, but Lagertha shoots her in the back as she walks away. She then gives her rival a funeral rather than denying her burial rites. Ubbe wants revenge for his mother's death, while Sigurd speaks bitterly about the attention Aslaug always gave Ivar instead of her other sons.

In Wessex, Ragnar and Ivar are prisoners when Ecbert returns to meet them. The king releases Ragnar from his cage so that they can talk, and their conversation moves between the destroyed settlement and their shared love for Athelstan. Both men question faith and the meaning of death. Ecbert admits his part in the settlers' slaughter, while Ragnar refuses to treat his explanation as an excuse.

Ecbert presents Magnus as Ragnar's son, but Ragnar denies having slept with Kwenthrith. Magnus is subsequently sent away, while Ragnar recognises Athelstan in Judith's son Alfred. Ragnar wants Ecbert to kill him, but Ecbert cannot bring himself to do it. Ragnar proposes being handed to Aelle instead, asking that Ivar receive safe passage home. He offers to have his son report that Aelle alone is responsible for his death, placing Ivar's return at the centre of their negotiation.
