Ragnar and Ivar survive the wreck and reach the English coast with the remnants of their expedition. The surviving crew blame Ragnar for bringing them there and want to return home. Bjorn reaches Frankish territory and seeks permission to sail along Rollo's coast toward the Mediterranean. Their reunion begins with suspicion, and Rollo has the visiting Vikings held in chains. He eventually offers passage on the condition that he joins the voyage. Gisla angrily opposes his decision to leave their family. Once at sea, Bjorn has Rollo dragged behind the ship before allowing him aboard again.
In Hedeby, Lagertha prepares an attack on Kattegat while Aslaug's sons are scattered between the expeditions and home. She invites Ubbe and Sigurd to dinner, then imprisons them so that they cannot intervene in her assault on their mother. Her warriors enter Kattegat and overcome its defenders. Lagertha stops the fighting rather than allowing her soldiers to keep killing the townspeople. Aslaug dresses in her royal clothes and takes up a ceremonial sword, preparing to face the woman who has seized her settlement.
