Paris

Spoilers for this episode.

Ragnar's fleet reaches Paris and camps outside a city protected by high walls and the river. The sight of the ships frightens its inhabitants, while Emperor Charles hesitates over how to respond. His daughter Gisla presses him to remain with his people, and Count Odo prepares the defences. Ragnar puts Floki in command of the coming attack, despite repeatedly reminding him how useful Athelstan would have been there.

Floki works on equipment to carry the attackers up to the walls, with another force intended to strike the gates by land. He tells Helga that killing Athelstan was a sacrifice and believes the gods are guiding his hands. His certainty frightens her. Bjorn's connection with Torvi also brings danger: after he gives her jewellery, Erlendur takes it from her and abuses her, making their brief encounter part of an already hostile household.

In England, Ecbert sends Aethelwulf to confront Kwenthrith over her refusal to obey their agreement. She presents a child whom she claims is Ragnar's and uses that claim in her negotiations. Ecbert meanwhile promises to protect Judith and Alfred, then kisses her. Back at Kattegat, Porunn asks Aslaug to take her daughter. Outside Paris, Floki finishes the siege equipment and announces that the attack can begin the following day. The warriors gather with torches before the battle.
