Two children are born while Ragnar gathers allies for Paris. Porunn delivers a daughter, whom Bjorn names Siggy in memory of the woman who saved his brothers. In Wessex, Judith gives birth to Alfred and is punished for adultery. After an ear is cut off, she names Athelstan as the father. Ecbert stops the punishment and treats the child as blessed, bringing Judith and Alfred under his protection.
A survivor from the Wessex settlement reaches Ragnar with news of the massacre. Ragnar kills the messenger to keep the destruction secret and prevent demands for revenge from overtaking his Paris expedition. Kalf arrives with Erlendur and Torvi, adding allies whose presence also carries old grievances. The planned voyage goes ahead while Ragnar keeps the report from his followers instead of publicly announcing the settlers' deaths in England.
Athelstan experiences what he understands as a return to Christian faith and tells Ragnar that he has been born again. Floki reads signs of his own as a command from the gods and kills Athelstan while he prays. Ragnar carries his friend's body away and buries him in the earth rather than giving him a Norse funeral. Alone at the grave, he mourns the person who helped him cross between two faiths and two worlds.
