The Return, Part 2

Contains spoilers for this episode and earlier episodes.

Bill Hastings tells his wife that he only dreamed of entering Ruth Davenport's apartment, but she accuses him of an affair and leaves him facing the murder charge alone. Back at home, Phyllis meets Cooper's double and is shot dead. The double also discovers that Ray and Darya were hired to kill him. He plays Darya's recorded conversation, presses her for information and kills her when she cannot give him what he wants. He knows he is due to return to the Lodge and intends to prevent it. A strange telephone call raises questions about whether the person speaking as Phillip Jeffries is who he claims to be.

Inside the red rooms, Laura tells Cooper that he can leave, opens her face to reveal light and whispers to him before being pulled away screaming. MIKE introduces the evolved Arm, now a tree-like figure, which says Cooper's double must return before Cooper can go out. Leland asks him to find Laura. Cooper approaches an opening and sees his double driving, but the Arm's hostile counterpart opens the floor beneath him. He falls through darkness, briefly passes into the New York glass box and disappears again. Hawk reaches Glastonbury Grove during his own search. At the Roadhouse, Shelly talks about her daughter Becky while James returns among the evening's customers.
