Otis gives Danvers a route toward the ice caves, but she and Navarro discover the entrance blocked. Peter's financial investigation connects Tsalal and the mine, while a meeting with Connelly and mine owner Kate McKittrick pushes Danvers toward accepting an official weather explanation for the scientists' deaths. Connelly also invokes the Wheeler case. The warning makes clear that pursuing Annie's murder could expose the detectives' own concealed past.
Leah is arrested during a protest, and Peter's marriage deteriorates as his work keeps taking him away from Kayla. Navarro scatters Julia's ashes with Rose and is pulled back from the ice after another disorienting experience. Peter then confronts Danvers with irregularities suggesting that Wheeler's death was staged. Their conversation establishes how close he has come to the truth without producing a complete confession. Danvers realises that Hank accessed Peter's work and passed information to Connelly.
Kate has enlisted Hank to stop Otis helping the investigation. Danvers nevertheless brings Otis home and obtains an alternative entrance after agreeing to supply him with drugs. Hank arrives claiming official authority, disarms Danvers and kills Otis. Peter enters with his own weapon. Hank admits moving Annie's body, then turns his gun toward Danvers, prompting Peter to shoot his father dead. Navarro urges a cover-up because she believes calling Connelly would endanger them. Peter remains to clean the scene while the two women leave to find the caves.
