The 1980 investigation closes around Brett Woodard after police claim to have found evidence linking him to both Purcell children. Wayne is uneasy with how readily that conclusion expands to other unsolved cases. His new closeness with Amelia provides some relief, but the case remains part of their conversations. Ten years later, the recorded call attributed to Julie directs official suspicion toward Tom, whom Wayne and Roland question despite his distress.
The detectives visit Harris James, the former officer associated with the evidence at Woodard's house who now works in Hoyt security. Dan O'Brien offers information about Lucy's death for money and suggests that someone paid to keep her quiet. Tom overhears enough at the station to find Dan himself and force out another lead. Amelia, meanwhile, encounters the man with the unusual eye at her book event. His angry questions about Julie leave her shaken and give her a face attached to the earlier description.
Tom enters Hoyt's mansion alone and finds a pink room below the house. His startled response is followed by Harris James appearing behind him; the episode does not yet show Tom's fate. In 2015, Wayne tells Roland that the bedroom opening once treated as suspicious could have allowed the children to pass comforting notes. He also confronts Henry about his affair with Elisa. A sudden lapse leaves Wayne unable to recognise Roland, showing how little warning separates his useful recollections from confusion.
